Fiscal year 2012 School Budget Presentation

Thursday, March 17, 7 p.m. – Buker Multipurpose Room

Please make space in your very-early-spring calendars to attend this Thursday night when the School Committee presents its budget for next year, which is Fiscal Year 2012.

By design, this evening is set aside specifically to allow parents and other interested citizens to ask questions and share opinions and concerns before March 31, when the budget must be voted in.

From what we can tell, this budget is both extraordinary and troubling.

Extraordinary because, for the first time since anyone involved in town or school budgets can recall, the amount of money the towns contribute to the schools will not rise at all.

So a 0.0% increase from Hamilton and from Wenham, and this during a year when the district’s health care and energy costs rose (as they did for everyone), state aid is forecast to be cut, and a new administration was feeling its way around a complicated budget for the very first time.

Troubling because a 0% increase, coupled with those rising costs, has the potential to leave us with a significant shortfall for Fiscal 2013, unless some dramatic actions occur in both town and school budgets in the next twelve months.

What does all this mean for your children and the programs and services they require? Come find out and share your opinions.

See you there — Thursday, March 17, 7 p.m. Buker Multipurpose
