Bad News Item 1: The Wenham Finance Committee voted not to support the full amount of the override.

Yesterday, the Wenham Finance Committee voted 4-1 not to support the full amount of the override. (The Hamilton Finance Committee supports the override 4-1 in favor and 2 of the 3 Hamilton Selectman support the override.) At Wenham town meeting the WFC will move to amend the override to reduce the proposed override amount from $1.889 million to $1.3 million, which would lower Wenham’s portion of the override from $600K to $413K.

We are uncertain of the repercussions to the budget at this late date. Legal counsels for the towns and school district are working on this and we will send an update as soon as we know. This action could leave the school district without a budget that would then require Wenham (and Hamilton) to later hold a second town meeting to approve a revised budget.

What should you do at Town Meeting?

Vote against any amendments that are not supported by the School Committee. Stay for the entire town meeting – not just for the override vote. Motions to reconsider and motions to amend can be introduced at any time.

Bad News Item 2: The NEASC placed the high school on “warning” status yesterday.

Yesterday, the High School received notification from NEASC ( New England Association of Schools and Colleges) that they were placing the high school on “warning” status and required the high school to address 22 specific concerns. Previously, the high school had received a series of citations. Click here to read the full text of the letter. The letter is also available on the SOS website at

We’ll be sending you more information later about the accreditation situation at the high school.
