We were excited and encouraged to get a large turnout (50+), with lots of new faces, at our latest SOS (Support Our Schools) meeting last week, an indication of the high level of concern about school funding.

We were honored to have Richard Boroff, chairman of the School Committee, Marc Johnson, chairman of the Hamilton Planning Board, Dave Carey, Hamilton selectman, and Art Oberheim, chair of the Hamilton Finance Advisory Committee, in attendance to share details about the school budget planning process, the senior housing bylaw proposal, and other relevant developments.

SOS’s goal is to work hard on many different fronts to help our communities, including exploring ways to generate additional sources of revenue for the towns and lobbying our state government for increased support.

For example, our sub-committee working on generating additional sources of revenue shared an impressive list of ideas, both short and long term, that could provide relief to the taxpayer. And our lobbying sub-committee has been networking with other towns and organizations on email campaigns to support key legislation that could bring some fiscal relief to our towns.

This is all part of SOS’s approach to join with other committees, departments, and citizens in our towns to come up with permanent solutions to our school funding problems that will be fair to all our citizens.

We welcome input from all community members.
